Studying between the High-Tech-Campus and Student City
There are few subjects that one cannot study in Munich. The degree programs at the city's twelve universities range from Architecture to Zoology and cover subjects as various as Film Directing and Genetic Technology. The city's three largest universities are the Ludwig Maximilians University with more than 44,000 students, the Technical University with almost 20,000 students and the Munich University of Applied Sciences with a total of more than 76,000 students.
Cities within the City
With three such large universities, it's obvious that there is not just one single campus in Munich. Of course the universities all have their main offices downtown, but the various institutes are scattered throughout the city. The Ludwig Maximilians University for example has about 100 different locations in Munich. This basically affects the students in two ways: firstly, the underground that connects the various university locations throughout the city, the U-Bahn, has almost become a second home to many students. Secondly, much of the students' social life, especially for those not originally from Munich, takes place at the huge student dormitories. Some of them have as many as 2,400 residents. The most famous dorm complex is the "Studentenstadt Freimann" on the outskirts of Munich. Its large apartment blocks do not make it particularly pretty. However it remains popular among students due to its cafés, bars and sporting facilities. The small town feel makes it easy, especially for international students, to get to know people.
Technologies of the Future
In recent years, Bavarian authorities have placed special emphasis on expanding degree programs in what they call "technologies of the future". About ten kilometers outside the city, a whole new high-tech campus, "Großhadern-Martinsried" has been erected. The satellite campus of the Ludwig Maximilians University offers modern laboratories for the university's chemistry, biotechnology, physics and pharmacy departments. And about 30 kilometers outside Munich, in Freising-Weihenstephan, the Technical University plans to build the Weihenstephan Science Center. The emphasis here is on food technology, biotechnology research and nutrional science.
Space-like Conditions on Earth
The Munich University of Applied Sciences also stresses innovative education and research. The university's electronics technology department has established a compact range lab. The highly modern facility allows the measurement of satellite signals from space. It is one of only nine such facilities around the world. The small lab simulates space-like conditions here on Earth.
