The Romantic city on the Neckar River
Swarms of tourists jostle each other in the narrow alleyways of the Old City, or pant as they climb the hill up to the Heidelberg Castle. It's a real Tower of Bable as snippets of English, Japanese, French swirl around the tourist groups, creating a turbulent sea of language. Camera shutters click, the lenses focused on the castle made of red sandstone. It's one of the most photographed and romantic ruins in Germany. Year after year millions of tourists make the pilgrimage to Heidelberg.
Asparagus and Wine
Heidelberg is the epitome of the romantic German city. The ruin of the castle reigns majestically over this place surrounded by forests. The Neckar river flows calmly by, spanned by a beautiful medieval bridge. The old town, completely spared from the bombs of World War Two, looks like something out of a picture book, lying as it does in the gentle foothills of the Odenwald. An almost Mediterranean climate means asparagus and grapes for wine can be grown. In Heidelberg, nature and history are closely bound together, along with the special spirit and joie de vivre of this unique city.
Steep Climb
Many well known personalities have stayed in Heidelberg at one time or another. The romantic scenery has inspired many a noted poet. Even Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Clemens von Brentano and Josef von Eichendorff have walked along Heidelberg's "Philosopher's Way," one of the most beautiful elevated promenades in Europe. After a steep ascent, one can enjoy a panoramic view of the Old City and the castle. When the weather is good, even the edge of the Black Forest is visible in the distance.
Magnet for Students
This special atmosphere has attracted tourists for centuries, but it has also pulled in countless numbers of people who come to study. Today, every fifth resident of this city of 140,000 is a student.
