Insurance

How do I get Insurance?

In Germany you can insure yourself against anything and everything, if you wish. It’s important to note, however, that some types of insurance are mandatory.

Health Insurance

Every employee must take out health insurance. If you earn more than 3,200 euro total, you can choose between private or public health insurance. Spouses who don’t work and children are often included in one’s insurance. Non-EU citizens who reside in Germany at least six but no more than 60 months can get special health insurance policies with substantially lower premiums. Some fellowship participants can also take out relatively inexpensive insurance policies. It’s always worth it to ask.

Retirement/pension and Unemployment Insurance

You don’t have to do anything regarding your retirement/pension and unemployment insurance; both are automatically withdrawn from your income. Years on, you will get part of this pension, if you did indeed pay into the pension/retirement system while you lived in Germany. You get part of it even if you decide to spend your retirement in another country.

Accident Insurance

Accident Insurance covers accidents on the job and is paid by your employer. Children in school or kindergarten are covered automatically.
