| Georg Heberer Award 2008 goes to LMU Munich researcher (07/18/2008)

Dr. Philipe Khalil of the LMU Munich Surgical Clinic has won the Georg Heberer Award 2008, worth EUR 25,000. Khalil was awarded the prize of the US-American Chiles Foundation for his new approach to treating chronically inflammatory bowel diseases by using adult stem cells. The Chiles Foundation has supported medical research, particularly in the area of cancer research, for over 50 years. Kalil's research may be significant in that it will enable the replacement of destroyed cells in the mucous membrane of the intestine, re-establishing the digestive and immunological functions and thereby helping cure diseases such as Crohn’s disease and Colitis ulcerosa.
