Not only for Priests
In Germany, the Catholic and the Protestant Church run 40 institutions of higher education. All of them offer degree programs which are recognized by the state.
At the three universities run by the protestant church, male and female students can train to be a pastor or a teacher of religion. Students can also study church music at five schools sponsored by the protestant church.
In addition, 13 colleges (Fachhochschule) sponsored by the Protestant Church offer courses in Social Welfare Education, Nursing and Religious Education.
The Catholic Church trains its priests at special theological seminars. The different catholic orders and congregations like the Jesuits, the Capuchin Franciscans or the Don-Bosco-Order all train their recruits at their own respective institutions of higher education. The only Catholic university in Germany which puts special emphasis on missionary theology is the Divine Word Faculty in St. Augustin, a small town near Bonn in Western Germany. The School for Church Music in Rottenburg is the only Catholic institution which offers courses in church music.
The Catholic Church also sponsors eight colleges, which train students in the fields of Social Work, Nursing and Religious and Parish Education. Each year, the number of applicants at Catholic institutions of higher learning is higher than the number of places available. That's why these colleges have installed their own methods of selecting students, for instance through interviews.
A unique institution of higher education in Germany is the University for Jewish Studies in Heidelberg. This academic center of the Jewish communities in Germany is funded by the German government and the German federal states. This school is open to students of all religious beliefs.
