Studying with a Handicap
Finding the right place to study is not easy. Handicapped persons have even greater difficulties in this regard. Mobility problems, technical learning aids and sign language interpreters are only a few criteria to be considered when beginning one’s studies. There is help, however, for those applicants who need it. The German Students Services has set up an advisory council especially for handicapped applicants. At several institutions, both handicapped and non-handicapped students jointly pursue common interests. Such groups offer advice and assistance and invite members to exchange their experiences. There are also specific residence halls, where handicapped students can find accommodation specifically adapted for those in wheelchairs. The residencies also provide nursing and physiotherapeutic care. And every German institute of higher learning is required to have a professor responsible for attending to the needs of handicap students. Of course, the greatest help comes from friendly fellow students.
