Sports

The Germans love leather; one certain leathery object in particular has buried itself deep in the German heart. It’s the football, or as the Americans say, soccer ball. Germans are crazy about the sport of football and with more than 6.3 million members, the German Football Association is the largest sports club in the world. But not everyone’s just kicking around a ball. There are about 87,000 sports clubs where members throw, run, hit, swing—win and lose. But it’s not about victory or defeat, it’s about moving. Inline skating has really taken off here and Germans love the rush they get from those four or five wheels on each foot. Many a Sunday stroll has turned into a Sunday sprint, one in which the art of stopping has not been mastered by all.

Fitness studios have taken off in popularity. More and more people are pumping iron these days, and each muscle seems to have its own machine designed to train it. Sports are popular at universities and students and employees there usually are able to condition their bodies free of charge. Almost everybody in Germany participates in some kind of sports and it’s not hard to find a club devoted to your own favorite physical activity. Still, if sweating’s not for you, don’t sweat it. In Germany, chess counts as a sport.
