Alternative Savings Account
If you want to put some money aside, you can set up a savings account. You’ll receive a “passbook” (Sparbuch) that you can pay money into. The interest rates are higher than those of a checking account. And in many European countries it’s possible to get national currency with a “Postsparbuch.” It can be worth your while. Still, a savings account doesn’t replace the checking account, since important services like direct debits and standing order debits aren’t available with savings accounts.
